Practical Steps for Replacing the Idols

Ever stared at yourself in the mirror on a Monday, after a weekend of not just poor food choices but downright awful ones, and gritted your teeth with determination and said, "Today is the day, drinking only water, eating salad. I can do this." Approximately 2 hours later, a friend messages you and wants to go to lunch at your favorite Mexican place and you think, "Meh, I'll start tomorrow."

And the cycle starts all over again.

I've been there. Gotten to the end of my day and realized I've given into the God of food and been left feeling empty. Seriously! So frustrating. I ask myself why I keep giving in. It seems that I've tasted everything to the point where nothing even has satisfying taste anymore? And again, here I am discouraged and feeling like I'm never going to have victory in this battle and the idol of food will ALWAYS win. Sound familiar?

I truly believe that simply removing this idol is not enough for us to have victory in this area of our life. Sure we can clean out the cupboard and the fridge so not a single trace of sugar is left in the house, but if all I'm doing is taking it out of my life, it will rear its ugly head somewhere else (at work, with friends, or with family) and I'll give into the first brownie that makes it's appearance.

Idols are defeated not by being removed, but by being replaced.

Colossians 3:5;10 says
Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry… and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator.

Jesus will begin to change our desires as we begin craving more of Him and putting to death our flesh, and sometimes that requires putting to death our cravings minute by minute and filling ourselves with the Spirit.

Paul says in Galatians 5:16
"Let the Holy Spirit guide your lives. Then you won';t be doing what your sinful nature craves."

As we submit to the Spirit we will crave more and more the things of him and less of what our flesh desires.

"God, help me to die today to my wants, my desires and not only remove these idols but seek your spirit as I replace them with more of you."
