When the Hill fights back, what do you do? Do you run away? Do you give up? Do you claim victory or admit defeat?
Saturdays are the days I have the time to go on long runs. Earlier in the week I had run 6 miles and conquered several mighty hills. With that under my belt, I felt that this past saturday was the perfect day to stretch myself and set a lofty distance goal. I got up and was on the road by 5:40 A.M.
The weather was cool and inviting, and I began to pray, praise, and cheer myself on. My mind was set on the task before me and I felt success in the air. I turned a corner at 3 miles or so and looked ahead. BIG hills. Bigger than I had run previously in the week.
There was no hesitation in my stride. In fact I was feeling pretty sure of myself.
Over confidence is the quickest way to ensure overlooking a critical detail. I quickened my pace and pushed myself up the gradual slope until I was at its steepest part. I felt so good that I thought I had it made! I ran down the other side of the hill thinking I had it made and then I saw the NEXT hill.
We often think that we get a break from the storms of life so we can rest up but many of us are in a constant battle day after day.
Unless we make time to spend time with God on a daily basis we will be overwhelmed, consumed, and laid to waste by the constant barrage of illness, financial struggles, depression and other weapons of faith destruction. We become tired, disoriented, and that is where we find our fatigue has replaced our faith. This opens the door for poor choices and their consequences.
The beauty of it all is that when we include God in our daily plan, we are assured that we will be protected. If we listen with our spiritual ears, HE will direct our path.
As I ran, I didn't think of the entire run in one piece. I mentally broke it up into little goals. Looking at a stop sign or a light post and telling myself that my goal was to reach that marker. Once that goal was met, I set another goal and kept moving forward.
When we let God deal with the entire challenge we face while we set little goals to accomplish, we put the pressure on Him. We put the worry on Him. We then are free to fully experience the victory.
Now I am not saying that you won't fail sometimes. You will have times when you have to stop and seek guidance. Never think you can face life on your own. Always seek Gods guidance. The enemy is tricky. He might not be able to stop you, but he can sure send distractions that can throw you off course. Our constant reliance on God can help us get back on course, but we need to know that the enemy will push back. He will try to derail us physically, emotionally, spiritually. We must know when its time for a course change, not to run away from but to detour around him to avoid his snares. Being mindful of our surroundings, the signs and listening for that still small voice that can only be heard if we are truly faithful will help us know what to do.
Know when to hold'em and know when to fold'em! Hills CAN and do fight back. Know when its your battle, and know when its God's to fight and you minimize the enemies effectiveness. THAT'S the Grace and Strength Lifestyle way to roll!
